Beyond the Drip Podcast Episode 2: The “Wild West” of Infusion

Welcome to “Beyond the Drip,” where we dive into the fascinating world of Infusion Pharmacy, from Home Infusion to Ambulatory Infusion Centers. Expect topical conversations on the latest happenings in Infusion from industry leaders who will bring you the latest news, trends and innovations in the infusion industry, as well as expert insights and stories to keep you informed and inspired.

In the second episode of our series, we host a round-robin on the "Wild West" of infusion, bringing back our industry experts Jon Love, VP of Pharmacy Services at Prochant, and co-hosts Brandon Carpenter, president of MedEdge Solutions, Pam McIntyre, founder and owner of Expert Infusion Nurse Consulting, and Brian O’Sullivan, president of The O’Sullivan Group. This dynamic discussion starts with Jon posing, “Why does this look like the Wild West of healthcare in infusion?”

The conversation reveals that the infusion sector is booming, which brings pros and cons for both patients, as well as providers who are staying on top of the latest innovation trends and trying to drive revenue growth.

Throughout the discussion, three main themes emerged, drawing parallels to the old Wild West:

  1. Uncharted Territory

Infusion pharmacy feels like uncharted territory, bringing numerous challenges, such as operational hurdles, staffing and logistics, as well as the lack of a unified language across the industry.

  1. High-Potential Rewards

The industry holds significant allure for private equity firms eager to invest, yet they often struggle to comprehend its intricacies. There's a metaphorical "gold in the hills," but this is tempered by the erosion of reimbursement rates. New verticals, like nuclear pharmacies, are also entering the space, seeking their share of the rewards.

  1. Significant Risks

A recurring theme is that those who falter in the infusion industry often do so because they failed to enlist experts from the outset. Many rely on trial and error, resulting in substantial financial losses. The risks of entering the market without proper knowledge and the lack of regulation are significant concerns.

In closing, Jon and the team discuss what newcomers to the infusion industry should consider and the future of this evolving frontier. Jon wraps up by asking the panel if they would buy or sell the idea of opening an AIC by mid-2026, providing a thought-provoking conclusion to the episode.
